Shobha Somnath Ki (English: Shobha of Somnath) is an Indian historical television drama series on Zee TV based on Acharya Chatursen's Hindi novel Somnath Mahalay.[1] It tells the story of a young girl called Shobha amid the infamous raids in western India by Sultan Maḥmūd of Ghazni in the early 11th century.
The show replaced another historical drama Jhansi Ki Rani on Zee TV. Initially, the drama was produced by Contiloe Entertainment. However, due to Veer Shivaji on Colors TV and Mahabharat (2013 TV series) on Star Plus, Contiloe Telefilms handed over the reins to Swastik Pictures. The show was shown every day for some months, and was changed to being broadcast bi-weekly due to decreased popularity. Another show Hitler Didi replaced the time slot when Shobha Somnath Ki was shown (starting 7 November 2011). On 12 November 2011, the broadcast time was changed to weekends only. It aired its last episode on 26 February 2012.[2]

Differences from the book[edit]
In the book, Shobhna was a Balvidhva, Brahmin girl; her father Krishna Swami was one of the 'adhikari' in the famous Somnath temple. Chaula was chief dancer Ganga's daughter, later revealed to be Dadda Chalukya's daughter. Later on Shabhna lives with Chaula as her close friend. The drama shows Shobha as the daughter of Kirit Chalukya (brother of Dadda Chalukya) and eventually a princess of Bharuch.

As per the book, Dadda Chalukya used to believe a lot on Rudrabhadra: he got a son, due to his blessings. Dadda Chalukya got Bharucha's kingdom due to Rudrabhadra's blessings, he gave his first daughter Chaula to Goddess Tripursundari on Rudrabhadra's advice, but Gang Sarvagya interfered and she was given to God Somnath. As a result, Rudrabhadra was very angry. In the drama - Dadda Chalukya and Rudrabhadra are shown as great rivals and Rudhrabhadra one of the main parallel antagonist to Ghaznavi. Moreover, Gayathri Devi (wife of Dadda Chaulukya) was the person who got blessings to get a baby (without Dadda's permission). A 'girl' was born not a boy and the girl is Chaula. Rudhrabhadra got a promise from Gayathri that at the age of 16 she must be given to Goddess Tripurasundari but she refused to do so later on when Chaula reached the age of 16.
Bhimdev, the son of Samrat Vallabhdev married to Udaymati, a princess of Saurastra Narvahan Khengar. He had also married to Bauladevi (also called Chauladevi) who was not a princess. Bhimdev had a son named Karandev from Udaymati and sons named Chemraj and Mulraj from Bauladev I. Mulraj died in very early age. In the series Chaula is indeed shown as a princess, but Bhimdev does not have any other wives.

Synopsis[edit]
In the show, contestants called 'housemates' live together in a specially constructed house that is isolated from the outside world. Housemates are voted out (usually on a weekly basis) until only one remains and wins the cash prize. During their stay in the house, contestants are continuously monitored by live television cameras as well as personal audio microphones.
Premise[edit]
The program relies on techniques such as a stripped back-to-basic environment, evictions, weekly tasks and competitions set by Bigg Boss, and the 'Confession Room' where housemates convey their private thoughts to the camera and reveal their nominees for eviction. At regular intervals, the housemates privately nominate a number of their fellow housemates whom they wish to be evicted from the house. The housemates with the most nominations are then announced, and viewers are given the opportunity to vote (via SMS or online through social media and smartphone applications) for the nominee they wish to be evicted or to be saved from eviction. The last person remaining is declared the winner.

The contestants are required to indulge in housework and are assigned tasks by the producers of the show (who communicate with the housemates via the omnipresent authority figure known to them only as 'Bigg Boss'). The tasks are designed to test the teamwork abilities and community spirit of the housemates. The housemates' 'luxury budget' (weekly allowance to buy luxury food items other than the supplied essentials) depends on the outcome of assigned tasks.
History[edit]
Creation[edit]
Bigg Boss is a Hindi (Bollywood) adaption of Big Brother created in Netherlands by John de Mol Jr., largely based on the Celebrity Big Brother model owned by the Endemol Shine Group. The show was named Bigg Boss and a house was constructed for the purpose of the show at Lonavla in Maharashtra. Bigg Boss debuted on television in 2006 through Sony Entertainment Television with Arshad Warsi as the host. The show gained popularity after Shilpa Shetty emerged as the winner[3] in Celebrity Big Brother 5 (UK) and replaced Warsi as the host in the second season of Bigg Boss. From the second season, the show has moved to Viacom 18's Colors.
Expansion[edit]
The show's acceptance and success among the Indian audience paved way for its expansion into other Indian languages.[4] After the sixth season was completed in Hindi in 2013, Kannada[5] and Bengali adaptions were created by Endemol through ETV Network with the same house and resources with Sudeep[6] and Mithun Chakraborty as hosts respectively. While the Kannada version became an instant hit,[7] Bengali version did not turn out to be very successful. The Kannada version saw its subsequent seasons annually, similar to Hindi while Bengali version has completed only 2 seasons in 6 years.
Upon completion of 10 seasons in Hindi, 4 seasons in Kannada and 2 seasons in Bengali, Endemol extended its presence in South India by creating Tamil and Telugu versions of the show with Star India in 2017 and roped in Kamal Haasan[8] and Jr NTR[9] as hosts respectively. In 2018, the show has been adapted to Marathi[10] with Viacom 18 and Malayalam with Star India and the hosts are Mahesh Manjrekar[11] and Mohanlal[12] respectively.
